Same feet, new shoes

OK, it’s not really new shoes, more like new feet – but since Nike and Soocial partnered for the first edition of the “Nike Web 2.0 Series” we thought that would get your interest. More info on the “Nike Web 2.0 Series” to come!

Lots of improvements

Soocial’s been working hard and we’ve just deployed a new version! This post will give you a quick overview of what’s changed. Behind the scenes a lot has changed, but also we’ve tweaked and improved the interface of the contact editor.

  • Contact editor: New way of editing contacts
  • GMail sync engine: Split syncing into fast and slow sync
  • Highrise sync engine: Split syncing into fast and slow sync
  • Sync server: fewer borked syncs and fewer faulty added contacts
  • Deduping: more accurate duplication detection
  • General: better scaling, many many bug fixes

Manual sync button

By popular demand we’ve added a manual sync button. You can now trigger syncs manually to GMail and Highrise from our web app. Our philosophy is that you shouldn’t have to use this button to sync. Syncing should be done behind the scenes with minimal interaction from the user. However in some circumstances you want to make sure things are syncing and thus we’ve added a manual sync button that allows you to schedule a sync for immediately getting and pushing changes to both GMail and Highrise.

Editing contacts changes

We also changed the way editing is done in the contact editor to having an explicit save button. The editing of individual fields was hurting our users so we changed it to something that is more stable and closer to what users expect. Let us know what you think of this, in the process we’ve also fixed the bugs that we’re causing unexpected behavior regarding editing of phone number and addresses. Things are much more stable and polished.

Small interaction improvements

We’ve also changed some other smaller interface elements, like save and delete confirmations. Putting things in the right place makes for much better contextual behavior. Like putting save confirmation in the same area where editing takes places. We’ve also change the way the deletion of a contact is confirmed. This will change again once we introduce an undo feature. We actually want no confirmation to be necessary, just an undo in the case of unwanted deletions.

Feedback welcome!

Let us know what you think of these changes, we’re keen to hear your feedback about bugs and ideas. Also general compliments/ideas are welcome – we love hearing about what works and what doesn’t work.

Great update. Things at the back end seem to be working much more smoothly. Highrise syncing is behaving itself and I can now get my Nokia E65 to send all its contacts to Soocial, rather than just the 70% before. Adding new phone connections now works properly. Just awesome, real progress.
