Improved interface: groups, labels and merging

Yesterday we updated our contact editor to include a third column on the left, as you can see in the below screenshot. We’ve also added a new way to edit labels which is a big improvement over the previous drop downmenu’s. Added to the already added improved way of handle merging released a few weeks ago, our interface is better than it’s ever been. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the changes — let us know what you think.

Below is a more detailed description of these changes.

Groups

We’ve added groups to our interface so that you can sync your groups and they will show up here in our webapp. Previously we were syncing groups but not showing them in an easy way in our own webapp. All groups that are in your address books should now show up here. These groups will sync back to all devices that support it.

Add groups: You can add contacts to groups by editing them, we will be adding drag and drop support soon but wanted to get this update out and have you start using it and providing feedback.

The prune button allows you to easily remove empty groups from the list

Label editing

We have added this new label editing widget.

We have added a new way of editing labels, as you can see in the above screenshot. The challenge here was to let you add, remove and edit more than one label, without cluttering the interface. The standard dropdown menu we had before was too limited and was tricky to add more than one label.

The star you can see denotes preferred fields that are used by many phones as the phone number you see as default in your phone’s address book. Click the star to make the field preferred, click again to make un-preferred.

Merging

Selecting 2 or more contacts will allow you to merge them

This may seem familiar to you already as we’ve added this a few weeks ago but haven’t blogged about it yet. The new way of merging allows you to preview the effects of a merge before you commit to it. We allow for an easy way to pick names and edit the names when you merge. A big todo here is to allow editing before you merge. In the mean time first merge the contact and then you can edit the resulting contact all you want.

Let us know what you think of the updates and we’ll keep listening and adding improvements in the weeks to come!
